Are the Dragon Gods Still Protecting the Mountains of Kobe?
A Dragon King's daughter. Eight ancient dragon deities. Mysterious sacred stones. And a mountain landscape steeped in spiritual legend... oh it sounds juicy! Read on...
Most visitors to Kobe come for its famous beef, beautiful harbour and spectacular scenery.
But high above the city, hidden among forested mountains and ancient stone formations, another Japan awaits.
A Japan of sacred waterfalls, mysterious goddesses, Dragon Kings and places where, according to centuries of spiritual tradition, the divine and earthly realms meet. And some of these extraordinary places are hiding in plain sight.

The Dragon King's Daughter
Just a short distance from the bustling streets of Kobe lies Nunobiki Falls, considered one of Japan's three great divine waterfalls.
But the real intrigue begins with the legend surrounding its waters.
According to Japanese tradition, Otohime, the beautiful daughter of the Dragon King, resides within the waterfall. The cascading white waters are said to resemble the princess's garments hanging out to dry.
Imagine that! A waterfall hidden in the mountains, a princess from an underwater kingdom and a story passed down through generations.

The falls themselves have appeared in Japanese literature for more than a thousand years.
And the legends don't end there.
The Mountains of the Unseen
Towering above Kobe are the Rokkō Mountains, a landscape with deep connections to Japan's ancient spiritual traditions. For centuries, mountains were regarded as places of purification, spiritual discipline and communion with the divine. Scattered throughout this landscape are enormous granite formations, some revered as sacred dwelling places of the gods.

One particularly intriguing site is Rokkōhime Daizen Shrine, where giant stones, Buddhist inscriptions and ancient religious symbolism come together. Among them is a rock engraved with the Buddhist Heart Sutra, a sacred text exploring the nature of reality and emptiness.
But perhaps the most fascinating discoveries are connected to the deities honoured here.
The Goddess, the Dragon and the Eight Dragon Kings
So now here's where the mystery really deepens. Rokkōhime Daizen Shrine is associated with Seoritsuhime, an enigmatic goddess of purification and flowing water.

In certain spiritual interpretations, she is also connected with dragons and the powerful, cleansing forces of nature. And nearby is something even more extraordinary.
A shrine dedicated to the Eight Great Dragon Kings.
In Buddhist tradition, these eight powerful dragon beings are protectors of the sacred teachings, associated with water, supernatural powers and the unseen realms.
How amazing is this - a mysterious water goddess, eight Dragon Kings and enormous sacred stones. All honoured within the same mountain landscape overlooking modern-day Kobe.
Why did this particular place become so spiritually significant?
What did the ancient people of Japan recognise in these mountains?
And could the legends preserve an understanding of the natural world that we have largely forgotten?
Six Dragon Pearls and a Mountain Mystery
The fascination with Kobe's dragons continues even today.
In 2020, a local mountain exploration adventure called Rokkō Ryūjin Denshō, or Mount Rokkō Dragon God Legend, invited participants to follow a mysterious story.
According to the adventure's legend, a Dragon God had descended somewhere in the mountains, leaving six dragon pearls scattered across the landscape.
By following clues associated with the pearls, explorers could discover the Dragon God's place of descent.
It was a modern mystery trail inspired by the region's dragon traditions, but what a wonderful reminder that these ancient stories continue to capture the imagination. And the interesting connection is that in Dunnedin when we go on our New Zelaand cruise, we're going to see what some say are Dragon eggs that were scattered on the beach. Dragon energy is coming up everywhere, even in Tasmania where our next conference will be.
Japan's legends have never entirely disappeared. They remain woven into its mountains, rivers, shrines and sacred places.

What Else is Japan Hiding in Plain Sight?
Perhaps the most intriguing question is what inspired these traditions in the first place. Why were certain stones considered sacred?
Why were waterfalls believed to be inhabited by divine beings?
And why do dragons appear so frequently in Japan's spiritual landscape?
We may never know all the answers.
But sometimes the questions themselves are enough to make us look at the world a little differently.
